Study validates Bios Self-Cleaning and Anti-Bac treatments

Issue 43 (September 2026) of the scientific journal Environmental Technology & Innovation features a study titled “Towards a comprehensive assessment of antibacterial ceramic tiles: linking surface properties to bacterial adhesion.” The research was carried out by a multi-disciplinary team including researchers from the University of Bologna, San Raffaele Rome University, the Italian National Research Council (CNR), and Casalgrande Padana.

The researchers analysed Casalgrande Padana porcelain stoneware tiles treated with the Bios Self-Cleaning and Bios Antibacterial technologies, confirming their effective antibacterial properties. The findings further validate the company’s long-standing R&D programme and the performance of the technologies it has developed.

For many years, Casalgrande Padana has collaborated with the University of Bologna in the research and development of antibacterial technologies applied to its products. The publication represents an important scientific validation of this research and of the performance achieved by the company’s technologies.

The study published in Environmental Technology & Innovation provides “a comprehensive multi- approach evaluation of the performance of ceramic tiles functionalized with antimicrobial agents, highlighting the impact of material composition, surface morphology, microbial strains tested, and manufacturing processes on their efficacy.

The evaluation of the properties and effectiveness of the Bios Self-Cleaning and Bios Antibacterial technologies was carried out by Silvia Nici, Martina Cappelletti and Daniele Ghezzi (Department of Pharmacy and Biotechnology, University of Bologna), Gabriela Graziani (Department of Human Sciences and Life Quality Promotion, San Raffaele Rome University), Enrico Sassoni (Department of Civil, Chemical, Environmental and Materials Engineering, University of Bologna), Francesco Valle (Institute of Nanostructured Materials, National Research Council – CNR), and Casalgrande Padana, which supplied all the samples required for the analyses and testing.
