Poop to Tile

If you, like us, have been eagerly anticipating the next tile/poop crossover ever since we first shared the wacky and wonderful snail poo tiles from Lieske Schreuder all the way back in 2016, your long arduous wait is finally over.

That’s right, today we have the pleasure of bringing to you more tiles made from poop! From the creative mind that brought us Rust Harvest and ForestBank, we can now welcome Poop to Tile!

Yuma Kano, the brains behind this operation, breathes new, and unexpectedly appealing life into a waste product I’m sure few of us have spent much time thinking about.

To create the tiles of Poop to Tile, Kano utilises a material much removed from the fresh faeces that probably sprang to mind at the beginning of this article. After the toilet is flushed, all matter makes its way to sewage treatment plants where microorganisms begin the decomposition process.

This liquid is then disinfected and released into large bodies of water like rivers or the sea. But what doesn’t get (or shouldn’t be) released is a ‘watery sludge’, usually incinerated for use as fertiliser. But Kano had other ideas.

Collaborating with LIXIL Ceramics Lab, Kano and co used this sludge ash as the base material of tiles. By experimenting with ratios and temperatures, a variety of unique glazes were developed to coat the unique tiles. The result of these experiments, and the finished Poop to Tile result offers a look altogether primary, earthy, and occasionally otherworldly.
