Corn Cobs to CornWall

Today we’re adding to our long list of innovative, exciting, and sustainable surface design companies. And it’s another corn-based creation.

From Amsterdam-based StoneCycling (who also produce WasteBasedBricks® made from 60% construction waste and BioBasedTiles® which are grown with the help of bacteria) comes CornWall, an interior wall finishing full of organic charm.

Made from the central cobs of corn, CornWall makes the most of an underutilised waste product from one of the world’s most widely grown crops. Usually corn cobs are left to biodegrade or are burned, but CornWall gives them a whole new stylish life.

To do this, each cob is dried and then shredded to form the basis of CornWall. This shredded mass is then mixed with pigment and plant-based biomass to give it unique colourings. This mix is then pressed under heat and high pressure. Once pressed, CornWall is cut to size and coated in a bio-based waterproof coating.

A number of earthy colours including RustRed, Burgundy, and LightGreen are available in their delightfully textured finish.

As well as predominantly using a waste material as the basis of CornWall, the heat and energy used in the process is produced via solar panels in the factory roof, and the final product is ultra light and thin, making transportation more efficient than heavier surface solutions.
