A Perceptible Performance of Preludes

Today’s colourful collection from Huguet Mallorca infuse maths and music for an unusual and unexpected set of decors.

Designed by Giorgia Lupi, the patterns of Preludes are informed by Chopin’s 24 Preludes, written by the composer between 1838 and 1839 whilst he was living in Mallorca.

Lupi, a designer who specialises in creating with data, curated a set of 24 tiles, each of which represents one of the compositions and within which a series of stripes, colours, and shapes signify various elements of the music.

The colour is defined by the key with red, pink, and yellow referencing a major key and green and blue a minor. The length (in minutes) is portrayed by a thin vertical white line whilst thicker vertical lines represent the number of octaves.

The tempo and number of beats per minute are displayed with horizontal lines and the geometric shapes on each tile highlight the musical characteristic of its partnered piece (e.g. elegiac, scherzoidal, cantabile)
