Commune Collection

Partnering with Los Angeles based design studio Commune Design, Exquisite Surfaces have created a striking selection of handmade tiles, rich with earthy charm and enticing personality.

Eight different designs – Sitio, Najavo, Zuni, Mochi, Circle, Drop, Bean, and Abstrakt – provide enormous variety, both across the design families and within them. Sitio alone is made up of eight variations of surface relief and four contrasting tones. These patterns, inspired by Brazilian artist Roberto Burle Marx, are made to be mixed and matched to form distinctive geometric designs.

The angular shapes of Navajo and Zuni take cues from Native American textiles, with matching greyscale colour schemes. A touch more colour is found in Mochi, Circle, and Drop where pinks and navy blues decorate the irregular curving shapes.

For Bean inspiration was found on the Japanese crests and motifs of Spanish Colonial tiles, with an unusual combination of plum and terracotta creating a blurred sense of time.

But for bold, beautiful colour, it’s the four Abstrakt tiles that take the crown. Playful patterns in vibrant shades of blue, yellow, red, and green, as well as calmer tones of grey, off white, and cinnamon browns demand attention as they present their joyous motifs for all to enjoy.

Najavo, Zuni, Mochi, Circle, Drop, Bean, and Abstrakt are all made from cement and measure 7 7/8″ by 7 7/8″ (200 by 200mm) whilst Sitio’s 3D design is made from ceramic and measures 4 1/2″ by 4 1/2″ (114 by 114mm).
