Another company to recently appear on our radar comes from very far across the pond in Toronto, Canada. But its name is taken from somewhere much closer to home. Black Rock Tile Studio is the title chosen by founder and artisan Catherine Carroll, honouring a road in the coastal Irish town of Bantry in County Cork where her father heralded from.
But the connection with the stunning location doesn’t end there. Many of Carroll’s designs and aesthetic choices are inspired by Bantry’s rich, natural surroundings, with greens that conjure images of rolling hills, sea-blues of the coast, and the soft neutrals of the town’s houses.
Working with clay for almost thirty years, Catherine Carroll brings a wealth of talent and expertise to her craft, with each tile hand-cut, hand-glazed and fired to perfection. It’s the work of the artisan that shines here, with each piece celebrating the subtle variety in tone, texture, and shape that comes unique to the art.
Black Rock Tiles’ designs offer inky gloss glazes, distinctive brushstroke decoration, varied texture and tones, unique marks of artisanal craft, 3D reliefs and gorgeous motifs in classic field, subway, hexagon, and diamond shapes.
