Surprising Stained Glass

Sculptor Kristi Cavataro interlocks tubes of coloured glass, refashioning an old art form to create something entirely unique.

Cavataro’s process stems from the years of mould-making and casting undertaken whilst studying at The Cooper Union, whereby the crafting of a modular system of ‘U’s and ‘O’s would form the basis of design. For these stained glass works, these ‘U’s, ‘O’s, and other shapes are combined, reoriented, expanded into larger forms, and filled with colour.

In a stunning fusion of industrial style and Art Deco finesse, these tubular designs have a familiarity about them with works similar to upturned golf clubs, coat hooks, and exposed pipes. Amongst the collection are both free standing and wall mounted pieces, each with a distinctive character and enticing appeal.

From afar they appear tiled with richly pigmented and sometimes opaque stained glass expertly formed in ordered lines that evoke images of subway stations and decorative pillars. The unique way glass holds and transmits colour creates layered elegance and sculptures that are both sturdy and fragile.
