The cuboid cats of Tosha Jagad

Two years into her journey as a ceramic artist, Mumbai-based Tosha Jagad has secured a delightful, distinctive aesthetic.

Originally a graphic designer, Jagad’s exploration in clay is heavily influenced by her perception of shape and form. Now driven towards the more tactile qualities of ceramic creation, her main material is Earthenware and Terracotta from Dharavi, with much of her work built up by hand.

Inspired by the kittens she fostered over the pandemic Jagad’s sweet, rectangular Nerikomi Block cats weave a continuous thread throughout her portfolio. To mimic the unique coats of each cat, she uses Nerikomi – a Japanese technique that marbles together different clays or combines them in various patterns. From checks and stripes to waves and more abstract designs, the minimalist cat forms are each given their own personality with some serving as pure decoration and others subtle function as storage or display.

Unusual vases and more sculptural creations further demonstrate her love for the freedom of clay but here’s to hoping for some tile designs in the future!
