Melon Moulds Make Bulbous Beauties

From the wibbly wobbly wardrobe of Sean Gerstley to the curvaceous ceramic cabinets of Jeff Martin, finding a tiled furniture treasure is a pleasure. And today, thanks to Remty Elenga and Remco van Halderen of Rotterdam-based art and design studio REM Atelier, we’ve got more to share.

Creatively pushing the aesthetic boundaries of everyday objects, the pieces of REM Atelier blend play and whimsy with explorations of material and textures to form uniquely tactile and visually striking homeware and functional interior statements.

Experimenting with the bulbous structure of melons, a series of towering totem lighting structures and decorated sideboards fills portions of their portfolio. This intriguing multi-dimensional, lightly ridged shape echoes throughout REM Atelier’s creations including their modular Shifting Forms piece comprised of 600 handmade ceramic tiles, Wall Skin decors, and cabinets featuring the cast forms of gently deflated decaying melons.

Each item features hand sculpted tiles, shaped with melon casts, delicately formed, and expertly glazed, highlighting each dip and dent for a uniquely characterful finish full of organic charm.
