Magnet chooses Morello as its 2027 colour of the year

Following on from Cersaie, where Burgundy was prominent as an accent tile colour, national kitchen retailer Magnet has selected Morello as its colour of the year for 2027. Magnet says the chosen cherry-red shade reflects its vision for “warmer, more expressive kitchen interiors”, and that it offers designers a rich colour that works across both classic and contemporary schemes.

“From the last glass of red wine on a winter’s evening, to a bowl of glossy cherries on a marble countertop, to the velvet banquette of your favourite bar with candlelight catching the walls; that rich, unhurried, quietly indulgent feeling is what we’ve bottled in Morello” explains Laura Townsend, Magnet’s Kitchen Design Manager. “After years of greige and safe white, Britain’s kitchens are ready to feel something bold again. Burgundy has been everywhere this season, from the runways of major fashion houses to the high street. Now it’s finding its way into our homes, as we move away from minimalism and stark colour towards deep, cocooning shades that feel grounded and emotional.”

“We’ve spent years playing it safe with the colour of our kitchens, and people are starting to realise that safe doesn’t always mean satisfying,” continues Townsend. “Your kitchen is for you, not for anyone else. Forget outside noise and focus on a colour that will bring you joy.”

Choosing a “colour of the year” has become an annual tradition for many brands across the design sector. Pantone is believed to have kick-started the trend when it picked cerulean blue as its first-ever colour of the year in 2000. As Diary of a Tile Addict has reported over the years, other companies have followed suit in later years, such as Dulux and Sherwin Williams.

“We sampled a lot of cherry burgundy-reds before landing on Morello,” explains Townsend. “It had to be a true deep cherry to translate beautifully into a kitchen, not too bright and not too neutral. Being British at heart, we also wanted a shade that married traditional elegance with modern boldness. As interiors shift from minimalism towards comfort and character, dark, rich colours are replacing stark neutrals. What surprises our customers is how versatile deep cherry redsthey are, mixing easily with natural wood, brass, marble and bold prints. Burgundy is fast becoming the new black in kitchens.”

“Lots of our customers worry that they will regret a bold colour, but actually, just because you’ve gone with a safer colour doesn’t mean you won’t regret it,” Townsend added. “Your kitchen is for you, not for anyone else – forget outside noise and focus on a colour that will bring you joy.”

Rooted in rich berry tones, Morello sits somewhere between traditional elegance and modern boldness. Its depth comes from a considered blend of plum, crimson and grounding brown undertones, giving it the character of red without the harshness of a primary shade.

Morello isn’t simply a bold colour. It’s a versatile foundation for a kitchen with personality. With 27 colours available from Magnet’s Paint-to-Order collection, there’s plenty of opportunity to have fun pairing Morello with complementary shade.
