Surface Matter Sweet Shop

Surface Matter are making a tasty statement at this year’s Surface Design Show. Their concept is to show off various innovative materials in a sweet shop pop-up. We have covered each of their surfaces previously on Tile Addict- the memorable Bencore, Richlite, and Durat, and those visiting the show will have the chance to thoroughly explore their many properties.

Bowls of miniature samples encourage visitors to pick up and investigate whilst learning the importance of sustainable materials and how they are made. The sweet shop was not only designed to add a touch of whimsy, but was inspired by Surface Materials’ Hackey-based materials library, which they state has often been called the a ‘sweet shop’ by visiting architects and designers. The stand has been created by Shape Studio.

A few new products will be launched at the show, including a collaboratively developed new colourway for The Palace Collection, created by Durat and MOST Collective. This will be “the only solid surface to incorporate raw earth minerals and natural pigments from an 18th century Dutch paint mill.”

Bencore have recently started using 100% recycled clear acrylic skins for their translucent honeycomb material, and will release a new colour later this year. Richlite will introduce Rosedale, a new colour within their compressed paper composite which will act as an alternative to rosewood, an exotic hardwood facing rapid depletion.

Surface Matter’s core materials have also been selected for Sally Angharad’s curation for Surface Spotlight Live – Close to Home – that highlights designers/manufacturers who focus on local ingredients and recycled or waste content.

The Surface Design Show will run from the 11th to the 13th February 2020.
