When looking to compile a list of our favourite façades we noticed a very clear front runner in the race for beguiling buildings – architecture firm MVRDV. Undeniable style, elegance, creativity, and flair are found amongst many of their projects, and three have been chosen for our selection of Five Fascinating Façades.

1. BVLGARI in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
A wonderful work of kuntisugi style where fractured rock is melded with glistening amber. Designed by MVRDV the building transforms at night as the cracked surface glows from its seams creating a lava-like look. Read more about the project here.

2. Lundhs HQ in Larvik, Norway
Displaying the many material styles of larvikite, the natural stone Lundhs As specialises in, their Norwegian HQ is a mish mash of textures and tones. Designed by Øystein Rognebakke from Halvorsen & Reine architects, the façade is awash with shades of blue and grey, with the surface punctuated by large 3D rough stone panels to show just how versatile larvikite can be. 3. Crystal Houses in Amsterdam, The Netherlands
A mesmerising building of clear bricks lets you see right into the shop’s interior. Designed by MVRDV the store originally housed Chanel but is now a location for Hermès. The project sought to recreate the exterior of the original building, forming each brick, architrave, and all, out of a high-strength UV bonded material that has all the elegance of glass. 4. Angelot in Hangzhou, China
This exterior is slightly more simple than the previous three, but the juxtaposition of the delicate, curved white tiles against the hugely industrial cement blocks of the main building makes for a truly fascinating façade. Imagined by architectural design firm Say Architects, the effect is highly impactful, and the intriguing interior follows suit. Read more about the project here.

5. M Cube in Beijing, China
The second design from China and the third from MVRDV, the magnificent M Cube was always sure to make the list. The magical iridescent tiles that coat the exterior have the wonderful ability of suiting the surrounding buildings and standing out as a pearlescent beauty among them.
