WFF (The Worktop Fabricators Federation) is launching a quality mark to help identify surfaces that have been produced safely, in an effort to protect the health of fabricators. The new scheme is a response to the risk of silicosis which has been linked to unsafe working practices. When it goes live in 2026, consumers, designers, retailers, and specifiers will be able to use the quality mark to distinguish surfaces fabricated by responsible businesses that adhere to safety standards.

The new scheme will be underpinned by regular workplace assessments. Participating fabricators will have to commit to robust management systems and processes designed to prevent hazardous exposure. In addition they will have to monitor workers’ health, and ensure employees receive training to raise awareness of the dangers associated with poor practice. Participating companies will also have to actively promote the Lungs at Work project.
Once the scheme is up and running, companies’ accreditation status will be easily verified via the WFF’s website. The quality mark will extend beyond engineered stone to cover all high-silica materials.
