Maitland & Poate

Bringing the traditions and atmosphere of classic Spanish buildings is Maitland & Poate, a London-based company with an eye for encaustic. What initially started as a quest to find fantastic Andalusian tiles for their own home soon blossomed into an obsession to source and collect some of the finest examples of handmade spanish tiles, and reclaim them for use in modern builds and remodels.

As with many tile obsessions, Maitland & Poate eventually ventured into tile design with colours and motifs inspired by antique and vintage patterns and techniques. Their collections include plain and decorative cement tiles, as well as hand painted glazes tiles, and their vast array of reclaimed pieces including terracotta, and antique and vintage tiles from all around Spain, France, and Belgium.

There are some truly special tiles to be found here, including 200 year old terrcotta from Medina Sidonia, some curiously swirled cement tiles from the 1960s in various colourways, awesomely unique abstract wood-look from the 70s, and many classic designs and examples from the 1900s.

Each beautiful example a small piece of history that can be absorbed, enjoyed, and cherished. It’s well worth a look around to see what treasures you can find.
