Sensational STACtile

This post is really two great tile opportunities in one.  First there is STACtile itself: a new 3D tile form that really hits the spot.  And then there’s the launch location, Pentagon‘s new London showroom in Leather Lane.  That also hits the spot.

So, let’s start with STACtile.  This is the brainchild of STAC – Snaith Thrush Architect Collaborative: a London-based practice that specialises in private residential and cutting edge bar/restaurant design.  STAC started with the concept of creating a modular tile that would embody the simplicity and playfulness of a child’s building block.  STAC has since developed a modular tile for use as wall cladding in large feature walls that creates a multitude of patterns and effects when stacked, shifted or rotated.  It is a tactile, contemporary cladding solution that is brought to life through light.

STAC wanted the tile to embody use pure geometries that, when put together, could create patterns that were both elegant and timeless.  Simple in concept and elegant in execution, STACtile is being mass produced in a single form, but in multiple colours and finishes to allow it to be arranged in an endless array of patterns and designs.

STACtile is best installed without the use of grout to create a more contemporary look.  It is designed for both internal and external applications and will weather naturally in large external applications.  STACtile is currently available in nine core finishes comprising of various Concrete, Sandstone, Marble and Wood varieties.

Despite the tiles apparent simplicity there are some rather complex and intriguing patterns to be found when arranging them.  With more than ten unique patterns combined with nine currently available finishes there appears to be a virtually endless array of options available to designers.  The tile is only one part of the story, it is up to the individual designer to create their pattern, select which materials to use, add light and bring the tactile quality of their design to life.

Pentagon Tiles’ showroom is a remarkable gallery space.  Designed by architect Simon Astridge, it boasts an array of subtle references to the area; the renovated shipping containers draw in colours from the surrounding brick work, whilst the jewellery cabinets pay homage to Hatton Garden’s historical jewellery trade. It is located at 45 to 49 Leather Lane, London EC1 and opened in Spring 2017.   Tile Addicts interested in learing more about Pentagon’s tiled installations and technical collaborations with Ardex and Shlüter should visit leatherlaneprojects.com.
