Offering a modern perspective on a historic material, Italian research hub Terraformæ seeks to push the boundaries of terracotta to produce fresh surface solutions full of organic charm.

One of these surface solutions blends two timeless favourites – terrazzo and terracotta. Designed by Sveva Bizzotto, Terraformæ’s Crumbles utilises production scraps, such as glass and cryolite, to form the freckling flecks that give it its terrazzo-like look. These flecks emerge from a selection of varying terracotta tones, from grey and white to brick reds which contrast against the specks in blue, pink, whites, reds, and more.

These colourful speckles dance through the terracotta to produce a finish full of joy that maintains the tradition of terrazzo with a playful twist. Cracks and imperfections distinguish Crumbles from the more polished look of classic terrazzo but our modern love for the unique, unusual, and nature-inspired finds value in these details.

Discover Terraformæ’s other multidimensional marvels clay-heavy creations, and distinctive designs here.
