Tile muraler and ceramicist extraordinaire Michael Chandler is gracing the Tile Addict spotlight today. With Chandler House, this UK-born South Africa-based artist lets his creativity run free, unrestricted by the shackles of tradition.

Although Chandler House houses many home goods, including beaded vases, carved wooden sculptures, and printed fabrics, it’s the tile work we’re most interested in.

Bars, cafés, and kitchens have all had the Michael Chandler mural treatment, expertly decorated with hand-painted characters, creatures, and scenes to transform them into captivating delft-style delights.

One can be found sprawling across the facade of a bistro in the Breede River Valley, a blue and white tile mural features the fauna and history of the Cape, sitting sprinkled throughout the branches of the Tree of Life.

Another, at the The Lavenhof Chapel in a private residence where a mother and child stand atop a balcony crafted in tiles and surrounded by elegant columns and lively foliage.

And yet another at the bar of The Robertson Small Hotel where guests can enjoy a unique view of Robertson and it’s surrounding mountains along with local plants and animals with a few little jokes thrown in.
